Wound Debridement

Details

Wound Debridement is performed by removal of dead tissue and restructuring of wounds in order to allow scarring reduction, and closure. This procedure is indicated to treat any condition in which a wound requires to be cleaned of dead tissue, foreign particles, and debris. Before wound debridement procedure begins, a general or local anesthetic is given. The doctor removes all dead tissue, or cleans out debris; closes the various tissue layers with appropriate sutures or staples; and deals with the skin defect, if any exist. Chronically infected open wounds are usually treated by extensive removal of dead tissue and coverage with a transplanted piece of muscle. Either the muscles of the abdomen or chest can be transplanted for this purpose. And a new technique for treating orthopedic surgical wound is to apply a few small antibiotics in the wound that are higher than those attained with intravenous antibiotics. The wound debridement is usually done by a general or trauma surgeon. Repair of scars, and procedures to prevent extensive scarring may be done by a plastic surgeon. This procedure may be performed in a hospital, outpatient surgery facility or a surgeon’s office that is well-equipped. Post-operation complications such as massive fungae infection of burn wounds, abdominal wall infection, peritonitis, and infection of abdominal surgical incisions may result from wound debridement.
