Here are some things that everybody should know:

1. The fish oil must consist of omega-3 fatty acids, not just ”fish oil”. Individuals must know that they receive health benefits only from omega-3 fatty acids.

2. The supplement should list the total DHA and EPA amounts on the bottle’s label.

3. The oil must be pressed only from the fish flesh.

4. The fish used for the oil must be disease free and health screened.

5. The Fish Oil must not have molecularly distilled, because such process alters and oxidizes the natural oil form.

6. Additionally to the label checking to ensure quality-product, contamination affects fish oil supplements quality levels, and is common concern. For example, concerns include the presence of heavy metals such as Mercury, Dioxins, and PCBs (presence of polychlorinated biphenyls. As we know, fish consists of mercury and high mercury’s level is detrimental to the person’s health.

7. Another essential factor, regarding the safety and quality of fish oil is whether or not the fish oil is Rancid. This is a legitimate concern (oxidative byproducts). While Non Rancid fish oil promotes heart health and many other health benefits – the Rancid Fish Oil is opposite, causing heart disease and other chronic conditions. Rancid Fish Oil is a big concern because fish oil starts to oxidize as soon as it has been extracted from the fish. Fortifying fish oil with anti-oxidants, particularly, Vitamin E, preventing such oxidation. People can check if fish oil is Rancid by biting  the capsule. It must taste fresh and slightly fishy. If it has an extremely fishy taste or tastes bad, it is considered to be Rancid. Also people have to check label closely and choose a brand that uses D-Delta Tocopherols forms (Vitamin E) and D-Gamma. This helps to prevent rancidity and oxidation, so such Vitamin E brands of Fish Oil more expencive and more likely to be good while biting the capsule to check.

Never buy the cheapest Fish Oil brand. The doses of 3,000 mg or less of fish oil per day produce no or little side effects. However, Fish Oil does have slight blood thinning effect – an effect that explains why it is so beneficial for heart  and an effect that is not necessary bad in and of itself. Such blood thinning effect may increase the bleeding risks, nose bleeds, and easy bruising. It is extremely important to decide if you use other thinning drugs or herbs, because combining fish oil and all these thinning herbs and medications, increases bleeding risk.
