Procrit

Details

Procrit (epoetin alfa) is a medication used in treatment of anemia in chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS, chronic kidney disease, and certain surgery patients. Procrit is a drug injected by a nurse or a doctor and is not for patients who experience high blood pressure which is uncontrollable. If you are a cancer patient, you may feel weak and tired due to chemotherapy. Some symptoms you may experience as a result would include: paleness, tiredness, shortness of breath, dizziness, and loss of concentration. Procrit works to help rebuild red blood cells so that you can gain back the strength. If you have chronic kidney disease, the condition may result in anemia, or lack of red blood cells needed to provide oxygen throughout the individual’s body. The good news is that Procrit can help by delivering more oxygen through your body because red blood cells contain hemoglobin. For HIV and AIDS patients, individuals receiving AZT therapy and those who also have anemia may increase their strength levels. If you have had a major surgical procedure, there is a possibility of major blood loss as well as a decline in hB (hemoglobin) level. Some patients may also become anemic after the surgery. The three common ways of treating anemia post-surgery include: using Procrit to build your own red blood cells, receiving a blood donation, or donating your own blood. Procrit reduces the need for transfusions in those patients who went through noncardiac, elective, or nonvascular surgery procedures. This medication is not indicated for patients who want to donate their own blood. There are different side effects associated with Procrit, with the most common being: diarrhea, high blood pressure, rash, edema, upper respiratory infection, vomiting, joint pain, cough, fever, nausea, shortness of breath, tiredness and constipation, and headache. You should know that there is a chance you may be at risk for seizures and blood clots while taking Procrit. If you feel like you are experiencing a loss of response to Procrit, this may be a serious and rare condition. For instructions on how to perform the injection, consult with your doctor for full instructions or if you have any other questions refer to your booklet provided with the medication. Your doctor will notify you on what to do if you miss your dose by accident. Keep Procrit away from the reach of children or animals.
