Osteoporosis is a medical condition in which the bones become weak, thin, porous and more susceptible to fractures. This disease usually is a concern for women but it also may develop in men. Women and men lose bone mass and it increases usually after the age of 65 as calcium absorption decreases with age in both sexes. Factors such as family history, vitamin D deficiency, smoking, low testosterone levels, excess thyroid hormone, insufficient intake of calcium, alcohol increase your chances to develop Osteoporosis. To detect bone loss, your doctor will perform blood and urine tests. Also the doctor will recommend that you undergo a bone density test, which is an imaging technique used to assess bone structure and density. Bone biopsy (removal of a small piece of bone tissue for microscopic examination) can be taken to rule out other possible bone disorders, such as steomalacia. To reduce your risk of developing this disease, you may chance your lifestyle that focus on your risk factors. If some bone loss already occurs, treatment with medications such as Alendronate and Calcitonin along with lifestyle changes may reduce the risk of fractures. Some tips to prevent Osteoporosis are: quit smoking, cut back on caffeine, exercise regularly, take in plenty of calcium daily, vitamin D with fat free milk and limit your sodium intake.
