Orbital cellulites

Details

Orbital cellulites is tissue infection around the eyeballs. Such infection can spread from bloodstream, teeth, or sinuses, or it can progress after an eye injury. Orbital cellulites symptoms include hazy, swollen, eyeball appearance, fever, swollen eyelids, decreased eye movement, bulging eyes, and extreme pain. If not properly treated, orbital cellulites may lead to blood clots in the brain, spinal cord and brain infection and blindness. Eye doctors usually recognize orbital cellulites without performing diagnostic tests. However, finding the cause can need future assessment, such as sinuses CT (computed tomography), x-rays, or mouth and teeth exams. Frequently, a doctor obtains sample from eye lining, sinuses, throat, blood, or skin and sends it to the laboratory to culture. Such tests help determine which bacteria type results in the infection and which treatment must be used. Oral antibiotics are prescribed for mild cases of orbital cellulites; intravenous antibiotics are given for severe orbital cellulites. In some cases, surgery is required to drain abscess (pocket of infection) or an infected sinus.
