Occult blood procedure is digestive system bleeding that may be resulted from something as serious as a cancer or insignificant as a little irritation. When bleeding is heavy, an individual may vomit blood, pass tarry black stool (melena), or pass red bright blood in the stool. Blood amounts extremely small to change the appearance of the stool or to be seen may be chemically detected, and the finding of such small numbers can provide early clues to presence of cancer, ulcer, and other signs of disease. At the time of rectal examinations, the physician obtains a sample of the stool on a gloved finger. The sample is placed on the filter paper piece impregnated with chemical substances. After another adding of chemicals, the sample’s color will change, if blood is present at times, an individual may take home a kit consisting of the impregnated filter paper. The individual places the stool samples from approx. 3 different bowel movements on the filter paper, which are then sent in specific containers back to a physician for examination. If blood is found, further tests are required to confirm the source.
