Nail discoloration

Details

Information on Nail discoloration: Many conditions may result in changes in the texture and color of the nail. For instance, injuries, such as which are resulted from heavy objects dropped on the toes, may result in blood to accumulate under the nails, leading them to look black. When the whole nail is damaged, it can detach from the bed of nail and fall off. Black discolorations under the nail must always be examined by a physician to eliminate skin cancer (melanoma). Injury may result in streaks on the nail or whitish spots. Overexposure to chemicals, some medications, or strong soaps, may result in nails to turn shades of gray, black, brown, or yellow. Fungal infection may also cause discoloration of nails. Treatment of nail discoloration consists of correcting the conditions resulting in discoloration and waiting for healthy nails to grow back in. After the removal of damaged nail, the nail takes about 12 to 18 months to grow back.
