Metronidazole is indicated for treatment of various infections. It is belonging to a nitroimidazole class of antibiotics. Metronidazole oral can be used with meal or a full glass of milk or water to prevent upset of stomach. Dose of metranidazole depends on the person,s response to therapy, type of infection, and person’s medical condition. The medication must be used at spaced intervals, recommended by a doctor. Even if the symptoms are disappearing after a several days, metronidazole tablets must be used unless the prescribed amount of this antibiotic is finished. Discontinuing the drug too soon can let bacteria to continue to grow, causing infection to relapse. If condition is worsening or persist, the person should inform his doctor. Metronidazole’s side effects can include dry mouth, dizziness, stomach ache, headache, taste changes, nausea, constipation, and loss of appetite. If any of such effects are worsening or persisting, the person must notify his or her doctor. This medication can result in urine to darken, but it is harmless. Many individuals taking metronidazole, do not experience severe side effects. The person must notify doctor promptly if any of such uncommon but serious side effects happen-painful urination, unsteadiness, feet or hands tingling or numbness, mental changes, or seizures. If following rare, but extremely serious side effects occur-persistent vomiting or nausea, sore throat, severe stomach ache, unusual bruising or bleeding, or persistant fever, the person must contact his or her doctor. Metronidazole can be prescribed for treatment of severe intestinal condition called pseudomembranous colitis, however, the treatment can fail. If mucus or blood in stool, cramping of the abdomen, or persistent diarrhea occur, the person must notify doctor promptly. Such condition can happen weeks after the metronidazole treatment in combination with other antibiotics finished. Repeated or prolonged use of metronidazole can cause a new vaginal or oral fungal infections. A serious allergic reactions to the metronidazole are uncommon, but the person must seek prompt medical attention, if it happens. The symptoms of a severe allergic reaction can include trouble breathing, rash, severe dizziness, swelling and itching. Before starting to use metranidazole, the person should tell doctor about medical history, particularly of nervous system problems, Crohn,s disease, or liver problems. While using metronidazole, alcohol must be avoided. Because metronidazole can cause dizziness, the person must be cautious while using machinery or driving. The older people are most likely to have side effects while taking this medication. Before using the metronidazole, the pregnant woman should notify her doctor. The drug is passing through the breast milk and may affect the infant, so the breast-feeding is not advised, while taking such antibiotic. Before breast-feeding, the woman must notify her doctor. The person should never change the dose, stop, or start this and any other medications without doctor’s approval. Metronidazole should not be taken with the following drugs- ritonavir or lopinavir oral solution, disulfiram, or amprenavir oral solution because they may interact with each other. The person should notify doctor about using all nonprescription or prescriptions medications, including seizure drugs, live vaccines, lithium, fluorouracil, cimetidine, busulfan, or warfarin(blood thinner). Metronidazole can interfere with specific laboratory tests, such as triglyceride levels in blood or function of the liver test, possibly resulting in false tests results. Doctor and laboratory personnel should know about using this drug before doing such tests. In overdose case, the person must notify emergency room or local poison control center promptly. Overdose symptoms can include seizure, severe dizziness, vomiting, and nausea. Metronidazole should not be shared with other people. Treatment of specific infections such as trichomoniasis, can require the sexual partner be treated as well to prevent repeated infection. During the treatment with metronidazole, using condom or refraining from sexual activities is preferred. The drug is prescribed only for current condition and must not be taken later for another infection until told to do so by doctor. If the dose is missed, the person should take this medication as soon as remembered and the dose should not be doubled to catch up. Metronidazole tablets must be stored in tight closed container at room temperature far away from heat, moisture, light, children, animals. Metronidazole in capsules form should be stored at room or below room temperature. Medication should not be stored in bathroom.
