Mesothelioma is a cancer which is caused from exposure to asbestos. It is rare and aggressive, affecting the inside lining of chest and abdomen. There are about 3,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Those that develop mesothelioma have had exposure to asbestos years before. Symptoms may not appear until 30 to 50 years later after asbestos exposure. Typical symptoms are shortness of breath and chest pain. Treatment options that are available include radiation, surgery and chemotherapy as well as the recently approved prescription drugs. Survival rate on average is from 4 to 12 months.
