Merck Pharmaceuticals, established in 1891, is a company dedicated to putting the patients first before anything else. The history of Merck goes back to 1968, in Darmstadt, Germany when Frederic Jacob Merck (an apothecarty) opened a chemical firm. He established himself in the United States near 1891 and set up Merck & Co., Inc, which began doing pharmaceutical research in the 1930’s. The company later merged with Sharp & Dohme which created Merck Sharp & Dohme, a distributor of pharmaceutical products. In 1993, an acquisition of Medco Containment Services was created. Merck Pharmaceuticals employs 70,000 employees in 120 countries, including factories worldwide. The company’s most popular prescription drugs and vaccines include: Singulair, Zocor, Vioxx, Proscar, Propecia, Fosamax, and Hyzaar. Merck is publicly traded under the symbol: MRK.
