Medimmune, Inc. is a biotechnology company, which engages in the development, discovery, manufacturing and commercialization of products to prevent or treat immune system disorders, cancer and infectious diseases. Medimmune’s essential products are Ethyol, Cytogam, Synagis and Flumist. Ethyol is prescribed to prevent some of types of radiotherapies and chemotherapies side effects in people with cancer. Cytogam is an intravenous immune globulin product enriched in antibodies against cytomegalovirus, a herpes virus, used to prevent cytomegalovirus disease associated with lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, or heart transplantation. Synagis is a humanized monoclonal antibody used for the prevention of serious lower respiratory tract disease caused by respiratory syncytial virus (rsv) in pediatric patients at high risk of acquiring RSV disease, such as premature infants. FluMist is a vaccine directed for the prevention of disease caused by influenza A and B viruses in healthy adolescents and children. Medimmune also produces other products such as RespiGam - an intravenous immune globuline used for prevention of serious RSV diseases in children under 2 years of age with a history of premature birth; NeuTrexin, a lipid -soluble analog of methotrexate, is used to treat Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in immunocompromised patients, such as individuals with AIDS. Medimmune has a strategic alliance with GlaxoSmithKline for development of a vaccine against human papilloma virus to prevent cervical cancer. Medimmune, inc. was established in 1987 and is located in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
