Medicare is a federal health insurance program provided for people over the age of 65 and people who have End Stage Renal Disease (a permanent kidney failure which requires a transplant). It was originated and established in 1965 by the Social Security Act and was a responsibility of the SSA. Medicare health insurance is provided to over 40 million Americans and is a national insurance program and consists of coordinated/separated programs: hospital insurance and supplementary medical insurance.
