Mastectomy Simple |

Mastectomy Simple is performed by removal of a single breast without removal of underlying lymph nodes or muscle. This surgery treats breast cancer which may occur in men as well as women. Before the surgery, the individual is given an anesthetic; the breast to be taken out is scrubbed with soap and antiseptic; the body is draped with a sterile sheet so that only the affected region is exposed. A doctor performs incision all the way around the breast, from the skin to the fascia of the pectoral muscles. Sufficient skin to cover the surgical wound is preserved. Vessels, which are bleeding are cauterized or ligated with an electrocautery device. The breast is peeled away from the underlying muscle and sent to pathologist for testing. The exposed lymph nodes and the fascia overlying the chest muscles are examined for spread of the cancer. The surgery may not or may include sampling of the lymph nodes in the armpit. A drain is placed in the wound, which is closed by stretching the remaining skin over it. The drain is held in place by sutures, staples or clips. The patient’s wound is covered with a bandage and the individual transferred to the recovery room. The Mastectomy simple procedure may be performed by an oncologist or a general surgeon in hospital. Complications such as swelling in the surgical area or infection may occur after operation.
