Lyrica (Pregabalin) is an FDA approved prescription drug that works to relieve the stabbing, burning, and shooting symptoms which are related to nerve and neuropathic pain. This medication is the first to treat the most common forms of nerve pain - DPN (diabetic peripheral neuropathy) and PHN (postherpetic neuralgia). In June 2005, Pfizer’s Lyrica received approval from the FDA for its use as an add-on type of therapy for partial onset epileptic seizures in adult patients. During clinical studies performed, Lyrica was given to 9,000 patients. The most common side effects that resulted from this medication included: weight gain, dizziness, peripheral edema, dry mouth, and somnolence. There was a low discontinuation rate. Lyrica can be provided to patients 2-3 times daily and is labeled as a controlled substance. Pfizer plans on putting Lyrica on the market for available during the fall of 2005. If you have had any allergic reactions in the past associated with the ingredients of this medication you should avoid taking Lyrica. You should also discuss with your doctor any complications that may result from taking this drug and know of any interactions that may result when taken with other medications.
