Genetech researchers said today that its treatment for a form of age -
related blindless maintained vision in subjects, and improved it
up to one third of the patients. The company's wet age-related macular
degeneration treatment Lucentis reached the primary endpoint of
maintaining vision in patients with the condition after a year.
There was a clinical trial of 716 patients of which 95 percent using
lucentis lost less than 15 letters of an eye chart, compared with
62 percent who lost fewer than 15 letters in the placebo group.
On another hand, the company found that patients treated
with lucentis after a year could read 7 more letters off an eye
chart compared with placebo-treated patients, who lost 10.5
letters. Wet amd occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow in front of retina and leak, leading to blindness.
