Lorelco

Details

Lorelco (Probucol) is a drug used along with diet in lowering cholesterol levels in the blood of individuals with primary hypercholesterolemia (a genetic defect that causes lack of low-density Lipoprotein (LDL receptors, which remove cholesterol from the bloodstream). Lorelco lowers total serum cholesterol, which means that it not only reduces LDL or “bad” cholesterol but may reduce HDL (high density lipoprotein) also known as “good” cholesterol. This medication is usually used, if exercise, diet, and weight loss fail to bring your cholesterol level under control. It’s urgent to know that Lorelco is a supplement, not a substitute for these other measures. Treatment will be more beneficial if this drug is used along with the prescribed diet and exercise program. All these efforts to keep your cholesterol level normal are important because they may lower your risk of heart disease. Common side effects of Lorelco include: blurred vision, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dizziness, fainting, headache, impotence, nausea, rash, loss of appetite, and stomach or intestinal bleeding. You should contact your doctor, if any of these symptoms occur. This medication should not be used if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it in the past. Do not take Lorelco if you have progressive heart disease, heart damage, serious abnormal heart rhythm unless you are directed to do so by your doctor. This medication usually starts to reduce cholesterol levels during the first 3-4 months of therapy. If your cholesterol is not lowered as expected, your doctor may discontinue your treatment with Lorelco. If this drug is used along with other certain medications such as Clofibrate, Norpace, Elavil, Thorazine, the effects of either could be decreased, increased or altered. You have to check with your doctor before combining any of these medications with Lorelco. If you are pregnant or nursing, contact your doctor as soon as possible. The regular dose of this drug is 500 milligram, twice daily. It should be taken with morning and evening meals. Lorelco should be taken with caution by the elderly. Use as prescribed and do not exceed your prescribed dosage.
