Levoxyl

Details

Levoxyl (Generic Brand: Synthroid) is a prescription drug indicated for the use to replace the hormone that is usually produced by the thyroid gland for a medical condition called hypothyroidism. It is very essential to have adequate levels of thyroid hormone in a person’s bloodstream in order for various organ systems in their body to work properly. Levoxyl is also indicated to treat other kinds of thyroid disorders such as thyroid modules, thyroid cancer, and thyroiditis. Side effects such as fatigue, constipation, muscle pain, weight gain, dry skin, and slow heart rate may appear, while using Levoxyl (Synthroid, Levothyroxine). These symptoms usually disappear as the body adjusts to this drug. Contact a physician, if these side effects persist or become worse. Such symptoms as nervousness, headache, trembling, increased appetite, sweating or insomnia may occur as well. In rare cases some hair loss can occur during the first several months of starting this medication. This side effect usually disappears as your body adjusts to Levoxyl. If this side effect however persists or becomes worse, you should contact your physician as soon as possible. Tell your physician promptly if you have any of these unlikely but life-threatening side effects such as shortness of breath, fast or irregular heartbeat, chest pain that may have possibly resulted from Levoxyl. An allergic reaction to Levoxyl is unlikely, but you should seek immediate medical help if it ever occurs. Before starting to use Levoxyl, it is very important to tell your doctor if you have such medical conditions as overactive thyroid conditions as a heart attack or adrenal gland disorders. Never use thyroid medications for weight maintenance. Inform your doctor, if you have heart problems, diabetes, female or male infertility problems, bone loss disease and other hormone disorders, blood clotting problems, as well as any allergies. Caution is needed when using Levoxyl (Synthroid) in children because overuse can reduce the child’s future adult height. Recent studies suggest this medication may be used during the pregnancy. Pregnant women should notify their doctor if they are pregnant, because the dose of this drug should be adjusted. Small amount of Synthroid may appear in breast milk and may affect your nursing baby. Notify your doctor before breastfeeding. Before using Levoxyl, tell your doctor all non-prescription and prescription drugs such as Coumadin, Estrogen, Digoxyn, diabetes drugs, Iodide lithium, anti-thyroid agents, phenobarbital, anti-depressants and others, because these drugs and Levoxyl may interact with each other. Warnings: Levoxyl should not be taken either alone or with diet pills to treat obesity or for weight loss because serious, even life-threatening effects may occur. Take this drug on empty stomach with a full glass of water. It is usually taken once a day before breakfast. For the use in children, the Levoxyl tablet should be crushed and mixed in 1 or 2 teaspoon of water to prevent chocking. The dosage for adults and children depends on your age, medical condition, your response to therapy and your laboratory test results. This medication is usually taken for life. It may take about 1 month before you notice any kind of improvement. In overdose cases, you should promptly contact an emergency room or your local poison control center. Laboratory tests must be performed periodically to monitor the effectiveness of this drug. If you miss a dose of Synthroid-Levoxyl, you should take it as soon as you remember. Keep tablets of Levoxyl in a tight closed container, far from heat, light, moisture, children and home animals.
