A kidney biopsy can be performed to confirm diagnosis and observe treatment progress. In this procedure, a tissue sample is obtained and tested under a microscope. A needle biopsy, where the needle is placed through the person’s skin, is frequently a part of the kidney failure. Evaluation, and transplant kidney biopsy is performed often to look for signs of rejection. For a biopsy of an individual’s native (own) kidney, the patient lies face down, and a local anesthetic is injected into the muscles and the skin of the back over the affected kidney. The biopsy needle is placed and a tissue sample is taken out for microscopic testing. For a transplanted kidney biopsy, the needle is placed directly through the wall of the abdomen. Ultrasound helps guide the needle.
