Ketotifen(Systemic) is a prescription medication indicated for the reducing of duration, severity, and frequency of symptoms of asthma and asthma attacks in children. This medication is not effective for the treatment and preventing of acute attacks. The drug is working by inhibiting specific body's substances that are causing asthma symptoms and inflammation. Ketotifen is available in form of tablets and syrup. Before starting taking Ketotifen, the person must tell a doctor if he or she has allergic reaction to this drug as well as to certain substances, including food, dyes, or preservatives. Women who are pregnant or intend to become pregnant must tell their doctor before starting this medication. It is unknown, if this drug is passing the breast milk, but it is known that it passes rats' milk. It is very important that every breast-feeding woman must discuss with her doctor about risks of this medication. It may affect nursing baby. Children study did not find different problems or side effects than in adults. While taking this medication, It is very important to notify doctor about using sedatives, antidiabetic drugs, hypnotics, antihistamines, or alcohol, because Ketotifen may interact with those drugs. People with epilepsy and diabetes mellitus should not take this medication, because it can make their condition worse. Ketotifen should be taken exactly as prescribed by doctor without or with meal. The dose should never be exceeded. In case of overdose, the person must contact emergency room or local poison center. Overdose symptoms may include confusion, blurred vision, sweating, unusual weakness or tiredness, palpitations, consciousness loss, hyperexcitability, irregular pulse or heartbeat, pounding, faintness, dizziness, severe drowsiness, and disorientation. More common side effect is weight gain. Less common side effects may include eyelids swelling, bloody nose, nervousness, irritability, increased appetite, excitation, mouth dryness, drowsiness, cough, chills, fever, sore throat, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, sleeping trouble, muscle pain, nausea, and unusual weakness and tiredness. Rare side effects may include cloudy or bloody urine; vomiting with blood, rash, redness, peeling, itching, or blistering of skin; specific breath odor; dark urine; stomach or abdominal pain; muscle spasm; or yellow skin or eyes. Ketotifen's brand names are Novo-Ketotifen and Apo-Ketotifen. This medication should be stored at room temperature away from heat, moisture, children, and pets.
