Infantile spasms and Febrile Seizures |
Details
|
Infantile spasms and Febrile Seizures occur only almost always in children. In fantile spasms (called salaam seizures), children lie on their back suddenly raising and bending their arms, neck, and upper body forward, and straightening the legs. Such attacks last only for several seconds but can repeat many times a day. Infantile spasms usually happen in children under the age of three; many frequently evolve into other types of seizures late in life. Most children, who have this disorder, have neurodevelopmental delay or associated intellectual impairments; mental retardations generally continue into adulthood. Such seizures are hard to stop with antiepileptic medications. Febrile seizures are caused by fever in children from three months to five years of age. Febrile seizures occur in approx. 4% of all children and have a tendency to run in family. Most children with Febrile seizures have only 1, and commonly such seizures last for less than 15 minutes. Children with febrile seizures are likely to develop epilepsy later on in life.
