Inducing Labor

Details

Inducing Labor is performed by strengthening labor using chemicals injected and/or applied to the cervix. This medical procedure is used when a pregnant woman is overdue for delivery or when delivery is progressing too slowly. It may be used for cases of preeclampsia and eclampsia, serious complications of late pregnancy that may not be controlled other than by inducing labor. In Inducing Labor, if the amniotic sac has not broken, the gynecologist-surgeon will insert a speculum into the vagina and pass a sharp instrument through the cervix to break the amniotic sac. This medical procedure is known as amniotomy. The cervix can be painted with prostaglandin gel at the same time. The medication Oxytocin is given through an intravenous line, and is usually inserted in the arm or hand. Otherwise, labor proceeds as it would if it were not induced. Inducing Labor procedure is considered to be surgical and is done by obstetrician-gynecologist and family or general practitioners who deliver babies. This surgery may be performed in a hospital or a birth center. In inducing labor, painting of the cervix with prostaglandin gel causes hyperstimulation of the uterus or fetal distress in less than 1% of the cases. To reverse the effect of prostaglandin, beta-blocker drugs are given.
