HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. History of the virus goes back to 1981 and it was identified as an agent of AIDS. During that time, the virus was called Human T-Lymphotropic Virus type III and also referred to as the Lymphadenopathy-Associated Virus. The actual name "HIV" was used since 1986. In 2003 there was an estimated 54,800,000 cases of HIV infections worldwide, 30% from South Africa. Common symptoms of the disease are: fever, fatigue, rash and swollen lymph nodes. HIV is a virus that brings the damage to the host such that it leads to immune deficiency. The disease can effect anyone including (babies, women, teenagers and other people of ethnicity). HIV, most commonly is transmitted through unprotected sex with a partner who is infected. The virus enters the body through lining of the vagina, penis, vulva, rectum or oral sex. It poses most risk to those who share needles, having sexual intercourse with an infected partner without the use of condoms and having sexual relations with a person whose HIV status is not known. The disease is also transferred through blood. Sometimes symptoms may not even appear until after 10 years after the HIV virus entering the body in adults. The term AIDS is used as the most advanced stage of an HIV infection. Diagnosis of HIV/AIDS is done by a health care provider through blood tests. You should get a test as soon as possible if you think you are exposed to the virus. There are treatment prescription drugs available to treat the disease including: Ritonavir, Amprenivir, Lopinavir and Fosamprenavir. There are no vaccines available for HIV.
