Heartburn is usually called GERD of gastroesophageal reflux disease. This condition usually occurs, when acid contents of the stomach wash back up (reflux) into the food tube or esophagus. This condition is frequently common in pregnant women as well as women who are obese or who have a hiatus hernia. Taking calcium or other smooth muscle relaxants may also contribute to heartburn. This condition happens when abdominal pain, associated with heartburn usually begins as a burning sensation in the chest that may radiate to the arms or the jaw. In some cases, sour-tasting materials back up as far as the throat or even the mouth. During a period of time the acid can lead to esophagitis or inflammation of the esophagus - a complication that makes swallowing difficult and may result in bleeding. Sometimes there may be coughing, wheezing, hoarseness. In general symptoms of heartburn occur soon after eating or lying down.
