Glucose Tolerance Test

Details

A Glucose Tolerance Test is a procedure that is used to measure the body's ability to metabolize glucose. Glucose is known as the sugar that is used for energy in an individual's body. To diagnose diabetes, a tool like the Glucose Tolerance Test would usually be performed. To prepare for this procedure, eat for 12 hours but avoid eating during the test and talk to your doctor if you are currently on any medication that can influence the results of the test. Some of the risks associated with the glucose tolerance test include fainting, excessive bleeding, infection or hematoma. If the results of the test show greater than normal glucose levels, it may give an indication of diabetes or gestational diabetes. During the test, a needle is inserted in order to draw blood.
