Genital Herpes

Details

Genital herpes are caused by a virus called herpes simplex or HSV; and although it can be suppressed by a special antiviral medication, it will lurk permanently in nerve roots where it can re-activate at any time. About 45 million Americans are infected with genital herpes or HSV; many of them don’t even know it. After an incubation period of 2 to 7 days, a newly infected man develops tiny blisters on his penis associated with fatigue, fever, and swollen lymph glands in his groin. Such symptoms as stiff neck and headache can also be a signal of herpes meningitis, which resolves on its own and is not as threatening as it sounds. If not treated, genital herpes settles down in about a week, but can reappear from within, even without additional sexual exposures. In some men, reoccurrences tend to become milder and less frequent over the months and years. Such antiviral medication like ovirax or Acyclovir can speed the resolution of genital herpes symptoms but will not sure the infection. Men, who have frequent recurrences, must usually take medication daily to prevent genital herpes outbreaks. Men should always protect themselves by using a condom because genital herpes can be transmitted even without the symptoms of the active disease.
