Flomax(Tamsulosin HCL) is alpha-blocker, which is developed for benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) and can be used only by men. It is not indicated for the use in females. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is an enlargement of the prostate gland. Most men develop enlarge prostate after age 50. Enlarged prostate can gradually restrict urine flow. This may lead to a feeling that man may not empty the bladder fully; an interrupted or a weak urinary stream; a feeling that a man must urinate immediately; a need to urinate frequently, particularly at night; or a hesitation or feeling of delay when the man start to urinate. To distinguish enlarged prostate gland from cancer, a doctor is usually measuring PSA( prostate-specific antigen) in blood. Capsules of Flomax do not affect prostate-specific antigen(PSA). Flomax works by relaxing bladder neck's and prostate's muscles at the obstruction site, leading to improving flow of the urine and lowering BPH(benign prostatic hyperplasia) symptoms. While using Flomax, a man should regularly see his doctor for checkups. It is very important to know, that Flomax may result in sudden lowering of blood pressure, which can lead to lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting. The person should get up slowly from lying or sitting position at any time until the man learns how he reacts to Flomax capsules. If dizziness starts, the man should sit down unless he feels better. Although such symptoms are not common, the man must avoid hazardous tasks or driving for twelve hours after initial dose. Other side effects can include ejaculatory problems, runny nose, insomnia. Sometimes such side effects can dissapear or decrease if the person continues to use Flomax capsules. In extremely rare cases, the Flomax may cause painful, prolonged penis erection. If left untreated, such condition may result in permanent inability of having an erection. If the man has prolonged erection, he must promptly contact emergency room. Before starting use of Flomax capsules, the man should discuss with his doctor all possible side effects. Flomaxcapsules should be taken exactly as prescribed by doctor appr. 30 minutes after meal. The person should never share Flomax with others. Flomax capsules must not be chewed or crushed or opened. The person should tell to his doctor if he uses specific drugs such as cimetidine, medications for erective dysfunction, warfarin, or other alpha-blockers, because Flomax can interuct with those medications. Flomax capsules are accepted by most insurance plans(PBM and HMO). Flomax is prescribed more than any other drug for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) and provides improvement of the urine flow within four or eight hours, and has ben proven effective for about six year period. Flomax capsules should be stored in tight closed container, away from heat, light, moisture, children, and pets.
