Flexible Sigmoidoscopy is a procedure enabling a physician to look at the large intestine in the patient going from the rectum through the last part of the colon, called the descending colon or sigmoid. The flexible sigmoidoscopy procedure is used to find out the causes of problems associated with abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea. This procedure does not detect polyps or cancer in the ascending or transverse colon. Before Flexible Sigmoidoscopy can begin, your colon must be empty and you will be required to drink clear liquids 24 hours beforehand. Special instructions will be given by your physician. For the test, a patient lies down on the examining table and then the doctor performing the procedure inserts a flexible tube inside your colon. The tube is called a sigmoidoscope and it transmits images inside the rectum as well as the colon for examination blowing air into these organs to help with visibility. The procedure takes about 10-20 minutes in total to complete in general.
