Uterine Fibroids also known as (uterine myomas) usually cause no symptoms and affect more than 30% of women. Fibroids may need to be treated if they grow large enough to cause pressure on organs like bladder among others, lead to fertility problems, create abnormal bleeding and rapid growth occurs. Fibroids may be diagnosed during a pelvic exam. Other conditions such as ovarian cysts or adenomyosis may be mistaken for fibroids. Fibroids usually tend to shrink after menopause however if they are causing symptoms, they may need treatment. There are no available medicines that will permanently shrink fibroids. Heavy bleeding could be decreased with birth control pills. Procedures to treat fibroids are available and many of them new. Removal of fibroids is called myomectomy. This procedure involves making an incision into the uterus, removing one or more fibroids.
