Ferrous Gluconate (Fer-in-sol), Feosol, Femiron) is indicated for the treatment or preventing low levels of iron in person,s blood. This drug is best working if taken 2 hours after meal or 1 hour before meal with a glass of water. To prevent upset of stomach, Ferrous Gluconate may be taken after or with meal with a whole glass of water. Sustained-release tablets and capsules should be swallowed. The medication should not be crushed or chewed because of possible increasing of side effects. After taking the capsule or tablet, the person should not lie down for an about half an hour. The liquid form of all iron supplements must be diluted in a glass of juice or water and sipped by using a straw to avoid teeth staining. Ferrous Gluconate (Fer-in-sol, Feosol, Femiron) in form ofsuspension should be shaken throughoutly before use and it should be taken along with water. Ferrous Gluconate must be used exactly as prescribed by a doctor. Side effects of Ferrous Gluconate (iron) may include vomiting, nausea, heartburn, constipation, and stomach crumps for the first several days as person,s body adjusts to this medication. Iron may result in the stool to become black. This happens because of unabsorbed iron and is common. Many individuals taking Ferrous Gluconate do not experience severe side effects. But if such severe side effects as chest pain, severe stomach ache, bluish-colored fingernails or lips, clammy skin, occur, the person must contact a doctor promptly. The person should not take iron(Ferrous Gluconate) without doctor approval if he or she has intestinal disease, colitis, or ulcers. Coffee or tea used with food or one hour after meal can decrease iron absorbtion. Milk and eggs can also decrease absorption of iron. Overdose of products containing iron, may be extremely dangerous, in some cases -fatal. In overdose case, the person must contact emergency room or local poison center promptly. Pregnant or breast-feeding women must take iron only with doctor approval. The medication should never be stopped, started without doctor permission. The person must tell his or her doctor about all of nonprescription and prescription medications he or she uses, particularly of: quinolone antibiotics(norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin), cimetidine, levodopa, methyldopa, penicillamine, and chloramphenicol, because iron and these drugs may interact each other. Also, use of Ferrous Gluconate(iron) should be avoided at the same time while using tetracycline antibiotic or antacids. The person should wait at least 2 hours between taking Ferrous Gluconate and tetracycline or antacides. Before making specific laboratory tests, the person must tell to the laboratory personnel or doctor about taking iron, because iron may result in false results. Various iron supplements are avaliable without prescription. This drug does not substitute proper diet. It's very essential to keep balanced diet under control Food rich in iron, include nuts, beans, pork liver, oatmeal, asparagus, dried peaches, and red meat. In case of missed dose, it should be taken as soon as remembered, but should never be taken, if it is near time for the next dose. The dose must not be doubled up to catch up. Ferrous Gluconate should be stored at room temperature away from heat, sunlight, moisture, children, and pets.
