FDA approves Takeda sleeping drug

Japan's largest drug maker - Takeda Pharmaceutical Co, LTD won U.S. approval to sell a new kind of prescription sleeping pill named Rozerem. The pill is generically known as Ramelteon, is company's first new in-house drug in 6 years. This medicine is used for long-term treatment of adults with illness like insomnia, which means difficulty sleeping. The Rozerem will be available in late August, the company said. Takeda says that Rozerem induces a state simular to natural sleep. To beef up the marketing of the new drug, Takeda Pharmaceuticals plans to bolster its sales staff by 500 to 1,800 by the end of March. In clinical trials common effects showed fatigue and diziness. A big competitor to this new drug is Sanofi-Aventis's $2 billion a year seller, Ambien. Another two major competitors are Pfizer Inc and Merck, Co.
