Details

Esgic Plus (Butalbital/Acetaminophen/caffeine) is a prescription pain reliever and a sedative medication. It is prescribed to relieve mild to moderate pain and tension headaches. Esgic may also be used to treat migraine headaches. Common side effects such as dizziness, lightheadedness, upset stomach, drowsiness, nausea, and sleeping disturbances may occur during the first few days as your body adjusts to this medication. If these symptoms persist or get worse, you should contact your doctor however. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop irregular and rapid heartbeat, severe nausea, yellowing skin or eyes, stomach pain, extreme fatigue, dark urine, allergic reactions such as: itching, rash, severe dizziness, swelling, and trouble breathing. Tell your doctor of your medical history especially if you have liver disease, narcotic, or alcohol dependency, mental/emotional conditions, heart disease, intestinal/stomach ulcers, and any other allergies. Esgic Plus contains acetaminophen, which may cause liver damage. Daily use of alcohol, especially combined with acetaminophen, may increase your risk of liver damage. To prevent oversedation, avoid using alcohol and other sedative type medications while taking Esgic Plus. This drug may make you drowsy or dizzy; use caution engaging activities requiring alertness such as driving or operating machinery. Avoid alcoholic beverages as well. Esgic contains caffeine, therefore you should avoid drinking large amounts of caffeinated beverages while taking this medication as irritability and nervousness can occur. Esgic should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Small amounts of this medication appear in breast milk. Consult with your doctor before breastfeeding. Notify your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs that you are currently taking, especially of: blood thinners, sleep medication, anti-anxiety drugs, tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, and antihistamines. Esgic plus may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills. Discuss using other methods of birth control with your doctor. Do not start or stop this medication without the doctor’s approval first. If overdose is suspected, you should go to emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, unusual drowsiness, lack of alertness, cold or clammy skin, severe nausea, loss of consciousness, yellowing of skin or eyes, upset stomach, and dark urine. To prevent upset stomach, take Esgic Plus exactly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose or take it more frequently then you should without a doctor’s approval. Do not share this medication with others and store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture. Do not store in bathrooms and keep other medications away from children and pets.
