Erythromycin is a macrolide type of antibiotic available only by prescription. This medicine prevents synthesis of essential proteins in susceptible bacteria. It is used for lower and upper respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, strep throat, tonsillitis, middle ear infection, skin infections, gonorrhea, syphilis, and other illnesses. Doses are given based on age or disease condition. You should not take this drug if you had previous allergic reaction to it before. You must take caution if you have kidney or liver disease. You should swallow the capsule or tablet with an 8oz glass of water or milk. Use Erythromycin as directed. Do not break, crush or chew. There are also chewable tablets and liquid suspension that exists. Erythromycin starts to work within 2-5 days. Best results could be reached if you take the medication on an empty stomach, one hour before food or 2 hours after meals. Contact your doctor if you have diarrhea, vomiting, skin rash, difficulty breathing. Avoid alcohol while using Erythromycin. Keep this drug away from light.
