Epogen

Details

Epogen (Generic Epoetin Alfa) is a prescription medication indicated for the treatment of anemia in individuals who experience chronic renal failure while on dialysis. Epogen works by correcting anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease and it functions just like the erythropoietin that healthy kidneys produce. Epogen is however produced by Amgen where scientists use genetic engineering to produce hormones of the hormone at the lab. The way that this medication helps patients is by controlling anemia and showing improvements in patients after 4-6 weeks or so. Individuals become more energized and are even able to start doing their normal daily activities. To see if Epogen has an effect on you and is working properly, you will need to have blood work done (hemoglobin or hematocrit). Your doctor will then measure the hemoglobin level in your system and make sure that it is in between 11-12g/dl. Epogen is administered by injection and is a colorless, sterile solution. There are different doses available of this drug, therefore your doctor will decide which vial size is right for you. Epogen can be administered up to 3 times weekly, depending on the individual’s weight. A dosage of Epogen can be changed based on your blood tests, therefore it is very important to perform the necessary blood work to figure out the right dosage for you. Epogen is typically well tolerated in patients with dialysis. The most common side effects of this drug include: flu-like symptoms or high blood pressure. These symptoms are most commonly associated with patients who have disease of the kidneys, and may not necessarily result from Epogen. It is important to take notice of your blood pressure while taking Epogen. At certain points, blood pressure may increase because your body may not adjust to the change in red cell blood cells right away.
