Endophthalmitis is an inflammation probably caused by a fungal or bacterial infection and involves the sclera (white of the eye), vitreous humor (eye fluid), and the inner eye layers. The condition may be caused by surgery, the sound that punctures the eye, or bacteria that travels through the blood to the eye. Endophthalmitis symptoms frequently are severe and include loss of vision, pain, extreme sensitivity to lights, and redness of the sclera (white of the eye). Such a condition is a medical emergency. Treatment must start promptly; a delay of even several hours may cause blindness. Corticosteroids and antibiotics are given together. Surgery can be required to drain fluids from inside the eye-ball.
