Encopresis is an accidental movement of bowels, which does not result from physical abnormality or illness. Approx. 17% of three-year olds and 11% of four year old’s have encopresis. Most of such accidents caused by resistance to toilet training. Sometimes, however they are resulted from chronic constipation, which stretch the wall of bowel and reduces the children’s awareness of a full bowel and impairs muscle control. First of all, a doctor tries to identify whether the cause is psychologic or physical. If an encopresis is caused by constipation, a laxative is given to normalize bowel movements. If this treatment fails, diagnostic examinations must be done. Psychologic counseling can be required for children with encopresis, caused by resistance to toilet training.
