Edema

Details

Edema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in body tissues. Edema is also referred to as fluid retention or bloating and it can be a symptom of many conditions, some relatively benign. People with edema may experience mild swelling in the face, fingers, knees, and bloating. This disease’s causes remain unknown, but it is usually attributed to changes of levels of progesterone and estrogen. Edema is known as a substantial and may lead to more serious medical conditions. Substantial and severe edema may also be a symptom of serious kidney, liver, and heart disease. Bloating is a clue if you have this disease or not. For example, swollen ankles are most common due to malfunction of the veins in the legs. Edema is relatively benign. Less frequently, ankle swelling may be a sign of a circulatory or heart disorder. Pulmonary edema, in which fluid accumulates in the lungs, may lead to a complication of congestive heart failure. At this point, people need immediate medical emergency. A doctor will evaluate the patient based on the physical examination and the patient’s medical history. Edema often disappears once the condition is treated. People with edema should restrict intake of salt, because the sodium increases water retention in the body tissues. Water pills (diuretics), may also be helpful because the decrease of water in the body and salt content increases the amount of urine excreted. Elastic stocking and supportive stocking are helpful for reducing ankle edema, caused by venous insufficiency.
