Echocardiogram

Details

An Echocardiogram is a test procedure where an ultrasound is used in order to examine the heart. The test provides single-dimension images that accurately measure the heart chambers and offers much more advanced imaging. Echocardiogram can be performed at a physician's office or at a hospital. For the procedure, you must disrobe from the waist up and lie down on an examination table. Electrodes are then attached to your chest for an ECG (electrocardiogram) at the same time. It is used to capture images on digital systems. After the lights dim, a technician is able to see your heart's image more clearly on the screen. Doppler Echocardiogram uses colors to indicate speed of blood that flows into your heart. This test usually takes less than an hour. Some patients may experience mild discomfort on chest or abdomen. A variety of heart abnormalities can be uncovered with an echocardiogram. Results usually may take up to a week.
