Dysphagia Lusoria is a medical condition, in which difficulty of swallowing
is resulted from esophagus compression by blood vessels. Dysphagia lusoria is a
birth abnormality and usually involves a defect placed right subclavian
arteries. The difficulties of swallowing can happen in childhood or can progress
later from abdominal vessel atherosclerosis.
Barium X-rays may reveal the
compressed esophagus. The procedure arteriography (x-rays of arteries made after
a dye injection) is required to determine that the compressions are resulted
from an artery. In rare cases, surgery may be needed.
