Donnatal (Bellatal) is a medication containing generic ingredients such as Atropine sulfate, scopolamine hydrobromide, phenobarhital and hyoscyamine sulfate. This medication is a mild antispasmodic drug used with other drugs for pain relief and cramps associated with various types of intestinal, stomach, and bowel disorders, including acute colitis, duodenal ulcer and irritable bowel syndrome. One of Donnatal’s ingredients Phenobarbital is a mild sedative, which can be habit-forming. Avoid taking Donnatal if you ever been dependent on prescription drugs in the past. If you experience some side effects, while taking this drug like constipation, allergic reaction, blurred vision, dry mouth, fast heartbeat, bone pain, agitation, and difficulty sleeping, you should contact your doctor who will determine if you should stay on this medication. Do not take Donnatal if you suffer from glaucoma and myasthenia gravis, diseases that block urinary or gastrointestinal tracts, severe ulcerative colitis, and loss of intestinal muscle strength. You should also avoid it if you experienced allergic reaction to it and its ingredients or similar other drugs. Use Donnatal with caution if you have high blood pressure, overactive thyroid, irregular heartbeat or liver disease. If this drug is used with certain drugs like MAO inhibitors, Benadryl, Bentyl, Cogentin, and Coumadin, the effects of either may be decreased, increased or altered. You should check with your doctor before combining Donnatal with other medications. The usual dosage is 1 to 2 teaspoonfuls, 3 to 4 times daily. The usual dosage of Donnatal Extentabs is 1 tablet, every 12 hours. Your doctor will adjust your dose, depending on your needs.
