Diabetes is a chronic and serious condition. It is estimated that 16 million of Americans are affected by this disease. In people with diabetes, cells do not respond to the insulin produced or pancreas produces insufficient insulin. Glucose builds up in blood and overflows into the urine. The body loses its vital source of energy while urinating. Diabetes is the number one leading cause of disability. This disease includes kidney failure, heart disease, nerve damage, stroke, blindness. It is very important to control this disease and prevent diabetes which helps you keep your blood glucose level as close to normal as possible.

You must check your blood sugar every day. If the blood glucose level drops too low, it may lead to hypoglycemia, which causes the person to become weak, tremble, sweat, produce fast heartbeat and chill feeling, confusion and pale skin. Sometimes people can even lapse into a coma. Hypoglycemia usually occurs if a person has taken an extra dose of insulin or oral diabetes medication or took less food than needed.

To correct low sugar in blood, people must take orange juice, soda pops, hard candy and other sweet products. Most of the people with diabetes carry glucose tablets with them in case of emergency. A person with the disease should wear a medical identification bracelet or necklace and carry a wallet card with medical information. An individual also may become very sick if blood glucose level is too high. This condition is known as hyperglycemia. It usually happens when people do not take enough dose of Insulin or oral medication or did not control their diet.

An endocrinologist is a doctor that treats diabetes. People with this disease should also see a podiatrist who will take care of your feet and ophthalmologist, the doctor for eye treatment. The major problem people with diabetes have is blood and heart vessel disease, which can lead to stroke, heart attacks and high blood pressure.

You should always be under supervision by a doctor or a nurse.
