Dermabrasion

Details

Dermabrasion, also referred to as surgical skin planning is a procedure that is more than 100 years old and has been popular since the 1960's. It is a resurfacing technique and has been perfected over the past few decades. During this procedure, a dermatologic surgeon freezes the patient's skin that has been scarred from acne or other causes and mechanically removes the skin in order to achieve a rejuvenated appearance as a new layer of remodeled skin replaces damaged skin. Results of dermabrasion are long lasting and remarkable in general. The procedure is performed in a dermatologist's office and a medication is given to relax the patient prior to surgery. The area is cleaned and is treated with a spray that freezes the skin. After the surgery is over, for a few days you may feel the skin as if it was severely brush burned. The healing process usually occurs within 7-10 days. New skin develops and gradually gives the patient a normal appearance. After Dermabrasion is performed you should avoid direct sunlight for 3-6 months and use sunscreen.
