Dental insurance is associated with a health insurance program. By paying monthly premiums you are eligible for some types of benefits such as x-rays, cleaning, regular checkups, and some types of treatment. Certain plans also offer coverage for some types of dental implants, orthodontia or oral surgery. The insurance company pays your dentist for remainder of charges. PPO plans have pre-negotiated discounted rates with selected providers, while indemnity plans offer you to see any dentist of your choice and do not have discounted rates at selected providers. Your insurance company will not start paying for your services until your expenses reach a required dollar amount. When a deductible is met you may pay a nominal amount of $10 per dental office visit or approx. 20% of the cost of larger procedures. Many dental insurance plans require the person to be a policyholder for half or even 1.5 years before paying for major dental treatment. Many dental insurance plans may only cover up to certain amount per member per year - $1,000. Once this cap is reached, the individual is responsible for all dental expenses.
