Cystoscopy |
Details
|
Cystoscopy is a procedure, performed by examination of the inside of the bladder through a scope inserted through the urethra. First, the individual is asked to urinate and the amount of urine is then measured. After that is done, the person is given an injectable general anesthetic or spinal anesthetic and is transferred on a table with stirrups much like that used for a gynecological exam. During the cystoscopy, the scope is inserted through the vagina and through the penis. The residual urine in the bladder is sucked out and measured. This measurement is added to the first measurement to give a number indicator of total bladder capacity. After that, the bladder is inflated with saline or other solutions and visually examined with the scope. If a medical condition that may be treated through the scope is found, randall stone knives may be passed through the scope to do the necessary work. Cystocopy is performed by a urologist and is done at a hospital or in an outpatient surgery center.
