Cryosurgery is a procedure that kills by freezing cells that are abnormal. It is used to treat precancerous, some types of cancer and other noncancerous conditions. Cryosurgery is a surgery alternative for cancer of the liver that has not yet spread, prostate cancer and for tumors of the bone. This procedure works by the use of extreme cold that is produced by liquid nitrogen to destroy abnormal tissue. Some of the other cancers this procedure treats include: skin cancers (in early stages), retinoblastoma, precancerous skin growths (actinic keratosis). Common side effects of Cryosurgery are impotence in men, urine flow obstruction and rectum injury in rare cases.
