Constipation is a medical condition which is defined as difficulty passing stool at least 3 times a week or as bowel movements that occur less than one time per week. It leads to bloating and abdominal pain in those individuals. This condition develops, when weakened muscular contractions in the colon slow the movement of waste. Constipation is common in men and women but it is twice as common in women and it can be due to inadequate or irregular diet, lack of exercise, not enough water in diet, reliance or laxatives, drugs that treat conditions like depression, heart disease, hypertension and indigestion. There are also diseases that can cause constipation such as stroke, spinal chord injury, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. The doctor must determine treatment options for the person with this condition. Usually, a change in diet and exercise, lifestyle changes and laxatives are treatment solutions for this condition.
