Colestid

Details

Colestid (Colestipol hydrochloride) is a medication prescribed to help lower high levels of cholesterol in your blood. Colestid exists in both plain and orange-flavored form. You never inhale this drug in its dry form as it may lead to serious effects. Colestid should only be mixed with water or other fluids before use. You may also mix Colestid with other liquids like: milk, orange juice, water, tomato juice. It can also be mixed with soups like tomato or chicken noodle, crushed pears, pineapple, peaches, and milk used on breakfast cereals. Before using Colestid you should measure 3 ounces of liquid into a glass and add the recommended dose of Colestid to the liquid of your choice. Stir until the medication is completely mixed well. To be confident that you took all the medication that you were required, you should pour a small amount of liquid into the glass and swish it around and drink it. Some side effects such as constipation and hemorrhoids may result from this medication. In some cases people may experience cramps, gas, headache, diarrhea, fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, and skin inflammation. If you have any of these symptoms you should contact your doctor who will decide whether Colestid is right and safe for you. Individuals should avoid this drug if they are allergic to any of its ingredients. Your cholesterol and triglyceride levels must be checked on a regular basis while you are taking Colestid. This drug also may cause or worsen constipation. You may be asked to increase the intake of fiber and fluids and use a stool softener when needed. Patients with coronary artery disease should especially be careful to avoid constipation as it may lead to worsening hemorrhoids. Colestid may reduce or delay the absorption of other medications; therefore the period of time between this drug and others should be as long apart as possible. Other medications should be used at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after taking Colestid. If this medication is taken with drugs like: Digitalis, Furosemide, Penicillin, Lopid, Inderal, and tetracycline drugs the effects of either may be decreased or altered. You should contact your doctor before combining Colestid with other drugs. If you are expecting to become pregnant or are pregnant at the time, you should get in touch with your doctor first. Regular dose is 1 packet once or twice daily. Your doctor may increase or decrease your dosage depending on your cholesterol level in the blood. The highest dose that may be given would be 6 packets per day. You should store Colestid at room temperature, far away from moisture, light, heat, and children. Use only as prescribed by your doctor and do not exceed the dosage.
