Chiron Corporation is a biopharmaceutical company, which develops, manufactures and markets products for treatment and prevention of infectious diseases around the world. Chiron is divided into 3 segments: pediatric/adult vaccines, blood testing, and biopharmaceuticals. The pediatric and adult segment contains pediatric and adult vaccines such as meningococcal, pediatric and influenza. Chiron sells these products in the U.S., United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany as well as other countries. The pediatric and adult segment also develops vaccinnation and novel vaccines technology. Chiron’s biopharmaceutical segment consists of pulmonary and infectious diseases, as well as therapeutic products for treatment of cancer, manufacturing therapeutic proteins, monoclonal antibodies and small molecules. It distributes its products to the public sector through hospitals and to private sector blood banks directly and through distributors. The blood testing segment produces nucleic acid testing products using transcription-mediated amplification technology to screen donated plasma and blood for viral infections. Chiron’s company blood testing segment sells immunnodiagnostic tests to detect retroviruses and hepatitis viruses. The blood testing segment also offers blood screening and nucleic acid testing in Europe, Asia and United States. Chiron Biopharmaceuticals was discovered by Edward Penhoet, William Rutter, and Pablo Valenzuela in 1981. Chiron is based in Emeryville, California.
