Cerebral angiography (called arteriography) is a procedure in which techniques are used to reveal abnormalities of blood vessels in the brain including strokes (blocked blood vessels), arteriovenous malformation (abnormal configuration), arteritis (inflammation), and aneurym (bulge in the artery). A substance called a radiopague dye, that is visible on an x-ray, is injected into an artery that supplies the brain. A radiopague dye shows the person’s brain blood flow pattern on an x-ray. Magnetic resonanse imaging also may be used to reveal arteries blood flow pattern at the base of the brain and in the neck, but an MRI is less detailed than a cerebral angiography.
