A cardiologist is a doctor specializing in heart disease, blood vessels, and lungs and manages complex cardiac medical conditions such as heart attacks and other abnormal and life threatening heartbeat rhythms. A cardiologist may be trained for a cardiac electrophysiology – a special interest field within the subspecialty of cardiovascular disease involving intricate technical procedures to evaluate rhythms and determine appropriate treatment for them. The cardiologist may also specialize in interventional cardiology – a field of medicine within the subspecialty of cardiology which uses specialized imaging and other additional diagnostic methods to evaluate pressure in coronary arteries, blood flow and chambers of the heart, and uses medications as well as technical procedures in order to treat abnormalities which impair how the heart functions. The cardiologist requires 3 years in internal medicine training plus additional examination and training for certification in cardiovascular disease interventional cardiology and electrophysiology.
