Captopril(Capoten) is a prescription angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, which is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure. Captopril(Capoten) inhibitor is lowering blood pressure by inhibiting angiotensin 2 formation, thus relaxing artery. Arteries relaxing is decreases blood pressure and improving cardiac output and pumping failing heart's efficiency in people who have failure of heart. The drug prepared in form of tablets 12.5, 25, 50, and 100mg. Captopril(Capoten) may be also use for the treatment of the kidney disorders associated with diabetes, improving damaged heart function after heart attack, and heart failure with combination of digoxin. Capoten(Captopril) should be used 1 hour before meal. The drug should not be used by patients with allergy to this inhibitor or other ACE inhibitors. Rarely, upper airways and facial tissues swelling may occur and may cause serious difficulties in breathing. This drug may interact with water pills(diuretics) and other blood pressure drugs, causing significant blood pressure drop, which may result in lightheadedness, dizziness, and weakness. Kidneys function impairment may happen sometimes in people, particularly who have pre-existing disorder of kidney or severe failure of heart. Capoten(Captopril) in combination with triamterene, potassium conserving diuretic, potassium consisting of salt substitutes, or potassium supplement may cause dangerous high potassium levels in the blood. Such anti-inflammatory drugs as Indocin(indomethacin) can decrease effect of Capoten(captopril). In very rare cases, while using this drug, the number of white blood cells may become low and increase infection risk. Cloramphenicol or anticancer medications may incease the chances of getting low count of blood cells. If Capoten(captopril) is used with lithium, Capoten may increase levels of lithium in blood to toxic. The drug is not habit forming. Safety, while used in children is not known. Capoten(Captopril) should not be used by pregnant females, because it may affect the fetus. It should also be avoided by breast-feeding women, because it may affect the nursing baby. Capoten(Captopril) is usually well tolerated and side effects are generally transient and mild. If cough occurs, while using capoten, it is usually resolving when treatment is stopped. Other rare side effects may include swollen or sore throat, rash, feet and hands tingling or numbness, fainting or severe dizziness, breathing difficulties, fever, chills, chest ache, easy bleeding or bruising, vomiting and nausea, appetite loss, taste loss, headache, fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, or abdominal ache. In very rare cases, jaundice (yellowing of skin) and liver dysfunction may happen. Capoten(captopril) must be used exactly as prescribed by a doctor. The treatment should never be started or stopped without doctor approval. In overdose case, the person must contact emergency room or local poison control center promptly. Capoten(captopril) should be stored at room temperature in tight closed container, away from heat, moisture, direct light, children, and pets.
